Things to do in Leixlip
The legendary substance that is Guinness will soon be entering its 252nd year of production and its content is as legendary as its history. There is no doubt about the fact that Guinness is the dark stuff of legend and has captured the world’s tastebuds for generations. It is in fact, almost synonymous with Ireland itself.
Leixlip village was established by the Vikings. Adam de Hereford, a follower of Strongbow, built the castle. Features of the castle include, The Front Hall, which boasts a 17th century Brussels tapestry depicting Theodotus offering the head of Pompey to Caesar. The Dining Room is furnished with Chippendale Chairs and Bavarian tapestries. This is a very pleasant, country walk, with the sights, sounds and smells of the open air, away from all traffic, which is just a distant hum. It meanders along beside the Liffey between Lucan and Leixlip. The Lucan entrance is opposite the McDonald's and the
Maxol garage, on the west side of the town. It is a marked Slí na Sláinte walk, 2.2 kilometres, about 30 minutes each way. The path is tarmacadamed all the way, wheelchair and pushchair accessible, but it is rather steep at the Leixlip end. Castletown is Ireland's largest and earliest Palladian style house. Built between 1722 and 1729 for William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons and the wealthiest commoner in Ireland.
The 18th Century walled garden adjoining Lodge Park has been under restoration for the last few years and the old brick-faced walls are clothed with climbers, fruit trees and roses. This fine Victorian gothic building, once stood near Inchicore Railway Works. In the Model Hall the Collection consists of Early Inventor's models, Scientific Engineering Models, and Historic Works of Mechanical Art.
The Straffan Butterfly Farm which is owned and run by Des and Iris Fox has been open to the public every summer since 1986. The butterfly exhibition continues to run every year during the months of June, July and August in Straffan, Co. Kildare, Ireland.
